Twelve Years of Gratitude – To a Faithful Friend: Dr. Haruhisa Handa

The Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (SHCH) was opened in December 1996. Since that time more that 1 million outpatient consultations have been delivered, completely free of charge. Many lives have been saved, and, in addition, many poor families have been spared the fate of abject poverty through the hospital's successful treatment of desperately ill bread winners. In addition to providing free, high quality health care to the poor, the hospital's mission includes furthering the education and clinical training of Khmer healthcare professionals. Since its inception SHCH has raised up Cambodian nationals to head all but two of the hospital's seventeen departments and has trained almost 2,000 professionals from other institutions. The hospital is continually strengthened by many visiting professors and clinicians from abroad.

Through all of this, we are especially grateful to Dr. Haruhisa Handa (Toshu Fukami) for his steadfast commitment to the hospital from the very beginning. Each year Dr. Handa, through the Japanese membership organization World Mate, has been the principal partner to hospital. In addition he has made extraordinary gifts to fund the construction of buildings, most recently paying for the build-out and furnishing of the new HOPE worldwide Medical Center. In addition to being a generous partner, he consistently gives invaluable advice and counsel as one of three hospital board members. For more than a decade, and on many occasions each year, we are reminded of the faithful friend that Cambodia and the Sihanouk Hospital have in Dr. Handa.
